Sevalal Maharaj

Sant Sevalal Maharaj (1739-1806)

Sant Sevalal Maharaj was an Indian socio-religious reformer and community leader. He is revered by the Gor Banjara community as a guru.

Early life

Guru Sevalal Maharaj was born to Bheema Naik Ramawat and Dharamani Mata Bheema Naik Ramawat in the 18th century. Maharaj had three siblings: Shri Badu Bhima Naik Ramawat (Rathod), Shri Happa Bhima Naik Ramawat (Rathod), and Shri Pura Bhima Naik Ramavat (Rathod). He passed away at Ruhigarh in Yavatmal district, and his samadhi is at Poharadevi in Washim district, in the present-day Indian state of Maharashtra.

Legacy

His samadhi stands beside a temple dedicated to goddess Jagadamba Devi at Pharadevi. Although he opposed personality cults and excessive ritualism, the site became a major pilgrimage centre for Banjaras. Similar temples dedicated to Sevalal and to Jagadamba exist in other places and attract many worshippers. Folk songs in praise of Sevalal are popular during Banjara festivities. Almost every Banjara, Gor or Lambadi village or hamlet has a shrine for Sri Sevalal Guru. Pink or red flags for Jagadamba and white flags for the Guru are raised at spiritual sites as symbols of reverence and community dignity.

Banjara Virasat Museum

The Banjara Virasat Museum at Poharadevi is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Banjara community. It features a 150-foot Sevadhwaj with an equestrian statue of Sant Sevalal Maharaj, daily light-and-music laser shows, and thirteen galleries of historical exhibits. The museum aims to establish Poharadevi as an important cultural and religious destination. Official information about the Poharadevi temple (washim.gov.in)

Today, Sant Sevalal Maharaj continues to inspire Banjaras across India and beyond, reminding them of their rich heritage, resilience and cultural pride.
